U.S. 30-Year Bond Yields Touch Lowest This Year on European Debt Concern

Treasuries climbed, pushing 30-year bond yields to the lowest level in more than four months, as concern that European governments haven’t yet overcome the region’s debt crisis boosted demand for the safest assets. Tomorrow the Treasury is expected to announce cuts to its record-sized auctions, which would be good news for the government bond market, where worries surface regularly that demand for U.S. government debt could wane, driving yields up and raising the cost of borrowing for consumers and companies. Investors believe the government will be able to reduce its auction sizes as early as May, as an improving economy and early repayment of bailout funds has left the government with more cash on hand.
